Concrete Grinding Discs

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I grind concrete with a regular angle grinder?

Yes. Our concrete grinding discs come in 4-1/2" and 7" with a 7/8" arbor, which is the standard mount on hand-held angle grinders, so they fit the tool you already own. Run the grinder at its rated speed for the disc size, keep the disc flat to the slab rather than digging an edge in, and use a shroud and vacuum for dust.

Which grit should I choose: 8, 16, 24 or 36?

8 grit is the most aggressive and is for knocking down high spots and tearing off thick coatings. 16 grit is the general-purpose choice for leveling and prep. 24 grit smooths what the coarse passes left behind, and 36 grit gives the finest finish of the four, which is where you want to end up before coating or polishing. We stock all four grits in both 4-1/2" and 7".

What is the difference between a grinding disc and a cup wheel?

A disc is flat and thin, so it works close to walls and in corners, follows the surface, and is the easier choice for smoothing and edge work on a hand grinder. A cup wheel has taller segments on a deeper body, removes material faster and covers more area per pass, but it is heavier on the tool. Most crews own both and use the disc for detail and finishing.

Will these fit my grinder, and do I need an adapter?

The 7/8" arbor hole fits standard angle grinders directly. For machines that do not take a plain 7/8" arbor we stock an adapter for concrete grinding discs (part AGD-1). Check your guard size too, since a 7" disc will not fit inside a 4-1/2" guard. Tell us your make and model and we will confirm before you order.

Can I use these to sand or smooth concrete rather than grind it?

Yes, that is what the finer grits are for. Use 24 or 36 grit to take the surface down to a smooth, even finish for coating or overlay work. Diamond discs cut the concrete rather than abrading like sandpaper, so they last far longer than a coated abrasive and do not clog on a damp slab.
