Frequently Asked Questions

What is PCD tooling and when do I use it?

PCD is polycrystalline diamond, and it shears coatings off a slab rather than grinding them away. That makes it the tool for removing epoxy, urethane, paint, glue, mastic, thin-set and similar sticky material, exactly where a diamond segment loads up and stops cutting. Once the coating is off, you switch to metal-bond diamond for the concrete itself.

Which formats do you make?

Cup wheels in 4", 5" and 7", both threaded and universal arbor; 3" round tooling in left and right turn; trapezoid tooling including the PCD-Zilla® XL and Mini-Zilla; WerkMaster™ style and Husqvarna® PCD shoes; and general removal tools for epoxy, glue and paint. Between them they cover hand grinders and most walk-behind and ride-on machines.

Thick coating or thin coating, and left or right turn?

The thick-coating tools carry fewer, larger PCDs that bite hard through heavy build-up; the thin-coating tools use more, smaller PCDs that spread the load and are less likely to gouge the slab. Left and right turn has to match your machine's head direction — some machines run forward and reverse, some only one way — and the wrong hand will not cut properly. Check your machine's rotation or call us and we will confirm.

How many PCDs should I want?

Fewer, larger PCDs are aggressive: faster on thick mastic and stubborn coatings, rougher on the concrete. More, smaller PCDs give a smoother, more controlled result on thin coatings. Our cup wheels run from 5 large PCDs up to 24 sharp-edged PCDs for that reason. Match it to the coating, not to the machine.

Will PCD tooling fit my grinder?

We make it to fit the common hand grinders and floor machines, including WerkMaster™ and Husqvarna® style mounts, but head format and rotation vary. These are World Diamond Source tools built to fit those machines, not OEM parts. Call us at 800-611-8278 with your machine and the coating you are removing and we will confirm the tool.
