What makes an asphalt blade different from a concrete blade?

Asphalt is soft and highly abrasive, so it attacks the steel core beneath the segment. An asphalt blade uses a soft bond with undercut protection so the core survives while the diamond keeps cutting. Cutting asphalt with a concrete blade is the fastest way to ruin a core; cutting concrete with an asphalt blade simply wears the segments off.

What sizes and arbors do you stock?

12", 14", 16", 18" and 20", all .125" thick, in 1" arbor and 20 mm mount. A circular blade cuts a little under half its diameter once the guard and flange are accounted for, so a 14" blade is roughly a 4-1/2" to 5" cut. Order by depth of cut you need, not by the biggest blade the saw will take.

What is the difference between the standard, Premium and Ultra Series blades?

They are three levels of the same family. Standard Road Runner® is the everyday asphalt blade. Premium is built for longer life in heavy production cutting. The Ultra Series 14" is the top of the range where you are cutting asphalt day after day and blade life per dollar matters more than the sticker price. Can I use these on asphalt over concrete?

That composite cut is hard on any single blade, because the two materials want opposite bonds. A soft-bond asphalt blade will wear quickly once it reaches the concrete beneath. For regular composite work call us at 800-611-8278 and we will spec a blade for the ratio you are actually cutting rather than for the top layer.

Wet or dry, and does it matter for asphalt?

Cut wet where the setup allows. Water cools the core, flushes the abrasive slurry out of the cut and is a large part of why an asphalt blade survives. Dry cutting runs the core hot, and asphalt fines are exactly the material that eats an unprotected core. Keep the water reaching both faces of the blade.
