Grinding Blocks

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a diamond grinding block used for?

It is a block-format abrasive for concrete grinding machines and grinding heads, used to flatten a slab, remove trowel marks and high spots, and open up concrete before the finer steps. The block format puts more material in contact with the floor than a small segment, which is what makes it a leveling tool.

Which bonds and grits do you stock?

Metal-bond blocks in soft bond at 30/40, 50/60 and 80/100 grit, and medium bond at 30/40 grit. We also make a carbide chunk block in 8 grit for the most aggressive removal, where the surface has to come down fast and finish quality is not yet the concern.

Soft bond or medium bond, how do I choose?

Inversely to the concrete: soft bond on hard concrete, so fresh diamond keeps exposing, and medium or harder bond on soft or abrasive concrete, so the block does not wear away. Getting it backwards is the usual reason tooling either glazes over and stops cutting or disappears in an afternoon.

When would I use the carbide chunk block instead of diamond?

When you are stripping heavy, soft, sticky material or taking a rough surface down fast and diamond would load up. Carbide at 8 grit is a bulk removal tool that leaves a rough surface behind, so plan on diamond passes afterward to flatten and refine what it leaves.

Will these fit my machine?

Grinding blocks mount to grinding heads and plates, and the fitting varies by machine. We manufacture tooling for the common ride-on and walk-behind grinders and stock plates and grinding-head plates to bridge between them. Tell us your machine and we will confirm the block and the plate you need.
