Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best blade for cutting tile with an angle grinder?

A thin blade made for tile, mounted on a grinder with a 7/8" arbor. For porcelain and ceramic, use a Zipper® Pro (black) or a continuous-rim blade; for mesh-backed and mosaic, the Mesh Zipper® Pro (red); for dense porcelain in volume, the Zipper® Heavy Duty (blue); and for a finished visible edge, the Pro Chamfer Edge Turbo blade. Do not use a masonry blade on tile, it will chip the glaze.

Which sizes and arbors do you stock?

4", 4.5", 5", 7", 8" and 10", with arbor holes covering 7/8", 20 mm, 5/8", 1" and 1-1/4" depending on the blade. The 7/8" arbor is the standard mount on hand-held angle grinders, so most of these go straight onto the tool you already own.

Continuous rim or turbo segment for tile?

Continuous rim gives the cleanest edge and is the safer choice on a visible cut, polished stone or thin porcelain. A turbo segment cuts noticeably faster and runs cooler because the gaps clear debris, at the cost of a slightly rougher edge. We stock both from 4" to 7" so you can carry one of each.

What kerf should I look for?

We stock .042", .045" and .060" in this range. Thinner removes less material, puts less stress on the glaze and gives the cleanest edge; step up to .060" where core stiffness matters more, such as stone or a long freehand cut. Thin is only an advantage if the core stays straight, which is why the blades are built with reinforced cores.

Can I cut dry on a grinder?

You can, and most grinder work is dry, but keep the passes short and let the blade cool between them, because heat is what warps a thin core and loses the edge. Dry cutting tile and masonry produces respirable crystalline silica, so use a shroud and a vacuum rated for silica, or wet the cut where the setup allows it.
