Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between SDS Plus and SDS Max?
They are different shank systems and do not interchange. SDS Plus has a 10 mm shank and is used in the smaller rotary hammers most crews carry for anchors and light demolition. SDS Max has an 18 mm shank for the larger hammers used on heavier drilling and breaking. Check the shank on your hammer before ordering.
Which sizes and lengths do you carry?
Our SDS Plus carbide bits run from 5/32" through 7/8" in diameter, in overall lengths from 2" to 16". The most requested sizes are 5/32", 7/32", 5/16", 5/8" and 7/8", and we stock multiple lengths in each.
What size bit do I use for a given anchor?
Drill the diameter stamped on the anchor, not the bolt's thread size, and always follow the anchor manufacturer's published hole diameter and embedment. Note also that a bit's overall length is not its usable drilling depth, since the shank and flute run-out take up an inch or more, so buy longer than your required hole depth.
Can a carbide bit drill through rebar?
No, and trying will ruin the bit. A carbide hammer bit is designed to pulverize masonry, not shear steel. If you hit rebar, either relocate the hole or switch to a rebar cutter or a diamond core bit rated for reinforcement.
How do I keep dust within OSHA silica limits?
Use a dust extraction system or hollow bit with a vacuum rated for respirable crystalline silica, or wet the hole. Dry hammer drilling into concrete puts you over the OSHA permissible exposure limit quickly, and Table 1 of the silica standard specifies dust collection for this exact task.
